+ I’m interested in trying out therapy, but this is my first time. I’m a little apprehensive/scared/freaking out on the inside. Could you tell me what to expect in a first session?
I felt the same way the first time I talked to a therapist! But there’s nothing to worry about. Usually, a first session will go something like this: we’ll sit down in the office and get comfortable, then I’ll go over a little paperwork with you (what we call Informed Consent, explaining your rights in counselling), then we’ll chat about what brought you here.
My style is open and relaxed, and our first session together is mainly about getting to know one another, getting to understand the challenges you are facing, and working together to set some goals for our sessions.
+ Are you offering sessions in person during the pandemic?
Yes, I am. My office downtown (113-970 Burrard St.) is large enough that we are sitting at least 8 feet away at all times, allowing for social distancing.
+ How about video and telephone therapy (telehealth)?
Yes, I offer video sessions via Zoom for Healthcare, and phone sessions as well.
+ How can I get the most out of my online experience?
Here are some tips on how to make the most out of your online experience:
Private space
It is important that you are comfortable to express yourself freely. It is ideal if you have a private room where what you say will be kept safe. Many prefer using headphones, with or without a microphone. Some have a white noise machine they can place outside of the door. If that is currently not available to you I know some clients sit in their car (not while driving!!) to have space.
Internet Connection
For online sessions you need a stable internet connection. If you can, use a device that is physically connected to your router/ internet provider through an ethernet cable. If your device does not have a connection for an ethernet cable you can get an adapter. If that is not an option, try to find a location in your home that consistently has a good connection (near the router is often better). Check your internet connection at (fast.com). You will need a result of 15Mbps or higher. If you’re seeing a number measured in Kbps, that’s not good news. If your internet connection isn’t great, you will have the option to shut off the video and do an audio-only session.
For your privacy and to protect the confidential space Zoom for Healthcare is encrypted and secure on your end and mine. I recommend the following browsers: on a computer or laptop using Chrome or Opera. You can also download and install the Zoom app on your computer, or via the App Store or Google Play for your iOS or Android device. If you are on a device, please ensure it is sufficiently charged or that you have the cables and power outlets needed to keep your device powered up.
+ How effective is telehealth? Does it work?
Yes, it does. Studies have been done to show that it can be just as effective as in-person therapy, even somatic work.
Some of the benefits of telehealth include the comfort and convenience of staying in your home environment. It may feel less stressful to stay where you feel safe, and it saves time commuting. It can also be beneficial therapeutically, allowing me to interact with you in your own environment where you may be more relaxed and comfortable.
The limitations are that I am not able to be with you physically, and some cues may be lost due to the limited view of the screen (or no visual cues, of course, on the phone). But most of the cues are still there.
+ How can I assess if you are the right therapist for me?
You can book a FREE phone consultation with me, where we can discuss a little what is going on for you, and allow you to get a feel for me and my approach, and ask any questions that you might have. We can also set up an online consultation. Click here to book a phone or online consult.
+ Alright, I want to book an appointment. How much is it?
A standard individual counselling session lasts for 50 minutes and costs $140 + GST = $147.
I also offer extended sessions for 80 minutes; these are $210 + GST = $189.
A couples counselling session typically is 80 minutes, for $180 + GST = $189.
+ I’m really struggling financially right now. Do you offer a discount?
I do, on occasion, have sliding scale slots available for clients that can demonstrate financial need. Please contact me at erik@erikschindler.com for more details.
+ Do you accept extended medical benefits?
YES! I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor(RCC) with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors.
Many extended health plans in BC will cover psychological services provided by an RCC. Usually these plans require you to pay up front and then get reimbursed by your provider. Please check the details in your plan to see if you have coverage.
+ How can I pay?
I accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), Interac debit, cheques, e-transfers, and cash.
+ I have more questions! What do I do?
No problem! Email me at erik@erikschindler.com or call me at 250-893-7337, and we can chat.
